Cellular:Connect
How does the cellular business work?
Students learn about economics while getting their cellular phone business up, running, and successful!
In Cellular:Connect students simulate the operation of a cellular telephone company. During the game students must decide where to build towers and place antennas in order to attract customers and thus earn money. As they place equipment they must keep in mind the current funds with which they can build and customers’ opinions of their service. Both are influenced by their decisions of where and how to place their equipment.
As they play the game, the decisions students make and the success they enjoy are largely dependent on their understanding of the costs and benefits of changes to service, that people change their behavior in predictable ways when changes in service occur, and that no change can satisfy all customers. The incorporation of GIS technology to help in their placement of antennas can make predicting behavior changes easier, as can conducting meaningful surveys of the population served. All of these constitute core concepts that will be valuable to students throughout their lives in a variety of undertakings.
