Compression:Connect
How does compression work?
Students learn about the principles of compression technology and the underlying mathematical concepts!
In Compression:Connect students simulate the function of a compression algorithm in reducing the size of files that must be stored or transferred via modern communications systems. During the game, they analyze sample “files,” identify instances where a data run or other pattern exists, and employ either “run length encoding” or “token compression” strategies to reduce the file to maximum allowable size. With each success, students are challenged with increasingly complex files, conditions, and constraints.
As they play the game, the choices students make and the actions they take to solve the compression problems presented provide a means for applying mathematical and technological concepts that represent core content learning. The identification of patterns, the manipulation of pattern variables in order to solve a problem or produce a desired outcome, and the interrelationship of these concepts with modern communications technology form a compelling venue for student learning.
