Students explore:
  • refraction, reflection, and the nature of light transmittal;
  • how information is sent via light using high-speed laser pulses;
  • how fiber optic technology capitalizes on these concepts to improve our ability to communicate.

Fiber:Connect

How do fiber optics work?

Students learn how the science of light and understanding of concepts such as reflection and refraction are changing how we communicate!

In Fiber:Connect students simulate the transmittal of light with laser beam signals through tiny strands of fiber optic cable. During the game, they must determine how to correctly angle mirrors to bounce a laser beam signal from one place on a map to another. As a signal fades over distance and with mirrors it strikes, they use strategically placed boosters to amplify the signal so it continues to the end. When their laser beam reaches the end, they receive a score for the level and move on to a new, harder level.

As they play the game, the decisions students make and the success they enjoy will reinforce the concepts related to the science, mathematics, and technology of light explored. The manipulation of light around barriers that absorb, using mirrors to route the signal, boosting signals when and where needed, and using angles to increase precision and accuracy involves a myriad of important core concepts that can be investigated throughout students’ explorations.
